Zero-click searches hit 60%. Here's what to do about it.
Most Google searches now end without a click. The strategic response isn't more SEO. It's becoming the source AI quotes.
Roughly 60% of Google searches now end without a click. AI Overviews answer the question, the user moves on, no site visit happens. For sites that depend on informational traffic, the impact is structural.
Why this isn't a content quality problem
The reflex is to write better content. It usually doesn't help. The issue isn't that your content is bad. It's that AI Overviews are pulling from a shortlist of sources and synthesizing. You either make the shortlist or you're invisible, regardless of how good page #7 is.
What actually moves the needle
Become the source. The sites that get cited in AI Overviews share traits:
- Strong Organization JSON-LD with sameAs links to LinkedIn / Crunchbase / X
- Recent dates and named authors on every meaningful page
- FAQPage schema with direct answers to the user's actual question
- Numeric specificity ("we process 12k invoices/month for 40 SaaS teams" beats "trusted by businesses worldwide")
- Zero duplicate boilerplate across location/product pages
Capture bottom-funnel traffic. Informational queries are bleeding zero-click. Commercial-intent queries (pricing, comparisons, "best X for Y") still convert. Lean into those.
Track citations, not just rankings. Rankings are a leading indicator of a dying metric. Citations are the new one.
The zero-click era isn't the end of SEO. It's a forced upgrade to a more durable discipline.
