Is AI search killing SEO? What the data actually shows
AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are reshaping search. Here's what's actually happening to organic traffic, and what to do about it.
Every founder I talk to is asking the same question: is AI search killing SEO? The honest answer is more interesting than the panic suggests.
What's actually happening to traffic
Roughly 60% of Google searches now end without a click. Google's AI Overviews satisfy the user inside the SERP. ChatGPT and Perplexity satisfy them before they ever open Google. The pages that used to capture that traffic (long-tail informational queries especially) are losing it.
But "SEO is dying" is the wrong takeaway. The discipline is shifting from rank-and-click to be-the-source-AI-cites.
What changed
Three things, all at once:
- **Answer synthesis replaced result lists.** AI engines pull from a handful of sources and synthesize. You either make the shortlist or you're invisible.
- **Structured data went from nice-to-have to gatekeeper.** Without Organization JSON-LD, sameAs links, and clean per-page schema, an LLM can't disambiguate your brand from competitors with similar names.
- **Duplicate boilerplate became fatal.** AI engines deduplicate aggressively. A page that's 70% the same as a competitor's gets dropped, not cited.
What to actually do
- Add Organization JSON-LD with sameAs links to your LinkedIn, Crunchbase, X.
- Write one brand description and reuse it verbatim across meta, OG, JSON-LD, footer.
- Unique-ify location and product pages: no boilerplate.
- Add dated, authored content with concrete numbers.
- Audit your site against the signals AI engines actually use.
AI search isn't killing SEO. It's killing lazy SEO.
